When it came to getting a smart phone that actually supported apps, I was a late bloomer. It took me until a little over a year ago to finally purchase an Iphone. Mostly because my old phone broke and well I needed to replace it. I knew that it was going to make keeping up with things much easier and well just way more awesome, but I really had no idea how much it would effect my fitness (and yes all for the better).
So what I'm trying to say is that there are some amazing fitness apps out there designed to help keep you on track, motivate you, and actually make working out a little more fun. I'm sure there's thousands of fitness apps, but I'm going to stick with five of the best Iphone fitness apps that I personally use and enjoy! So here goes:
1. MyFitnessPal
This app is a great way to track your meals, workouts, and progress! As I've mentioned in the past, keeping a food journal can be a huge part of successfully losing weight. This app makes it super easy. You can search foods or even scan barcodes to input food data and the app will calculate your calories and other nutrition facts for the day. In addition, you can log your exercise, track your progress, and even add friends so that you can see their progress and updates. Here's a quick screenshot from my phone in the afternoon yesterday:

You love to run, right? Or maybe it’s lifting weights or swimming that get your body moving. Whatever it is, there is some activity that your body loves to do. No matter what, you need to be careful to protect yourself so that you don’t end up injured and can no longer do what you love. Here are some tips to follow to ensure successful exercise sessions.
1. Make sure you are having regular check ups
This may sound silly, but this is incredibly important, especially when starting a new fitness regimen. You need to make sure that your body is able to handle the change in stress. An undiagnosed condition can lead to nothing but trouble if you do not modify your exercise accordingly. Also, your doctor will have good advice on how to still do what you love, even if you have recurrent issues with a certain part of your body.
2. Warm up before exercise
Warming up before exercise is one of the best ways to ensure a successful workout. You want to start slowly, gradually moving into the speed and exercises that you will be using doing your workout. Some great warm ups include: stretching, walking, jogging, or meditation. These help get your mind and body into a great place to work out. Read the rest of 7 ways to avoid exercise injury
If you are like most people, keeping your waistline in check over the last few weeks has been a challenge. With holiday parties and erratic schedules your diet has probably not been what one would exactly call healthy. And on top of that, hectic schedules and well even just gloomy, cold weather can leave you unmotivated to workout. So now is the time to get back on track with your diet and fitness routine so you can start to lose unwanted holiday weight gain and get back into shape. Here are a few tips to get you headed in the right direction:
1. Toss the crap. If sugar cookies, chocolate candy, and egg nog have been your main food source for the last few weeks it’s time to clean up your diet. If you have any of these foods left in your house it may be a good idea to toss them in the trash. There’s no need to have the temptation lying around when you are trying to eat healthy again. So toss any unhealthy leftovers, and instead hit the store for some healthy fruits, veggies, nuts, lean meats, and whole grains. Read the rest of 5 Tips To Lose Holiday Weight Gain
Thanksgiving is right around the corner and we all know what that means…a day of overeating followed by the holiday season of parties and food. Is your workout routine already a bit sporadic? If so why not ramp up your exercise routine to get ready for the holidays and avoid some unwanted weight gain this season? And even better yet, why not train to walk or run a 5K Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving so you can burn a bunch of calories before digging in? Hey at least it'll make you feel a little better about eating some pumpkin pie. If you're not up for running, that's ok. I don't want to hear that as an excuse. Most of these races will let you walk, so quit trying to get out of it! I'm actually heading home to Michigan this Thanksgiving to visit my family, so I'm going to try my hardest to recruit as many of them as I can to join me for the our local Turkey Trot race. So that may be a fun way to bond with your family as well. So what do you say? Are you in with me? If so be sure to check for a turkey trot in your area.
