The regular gyms, and especially those big-box gyms, can be intimidating for anyone. What is the etiquette? How do the machines work? What should one do to get the best results? If you don’t have someone to mentor you and show you the ropes, it could keep you from getting fit and feeling better.
And the big classes like Zumba or aerobics? If you don’t know the routines, you can feel a lot like Lucille Ball in that episode, the one where she gets on stage without knowing any choreography. Classic! But not fun at all when you’re the one turning left when you ought to be sliding right.
Carmen Gonzalez had never worked out in a gym her entire life. Ever. She did play soccer with the neighborhood kids in her native Honduras, but she never played anything competitively.
While she has always been fairly trim, she started to feel like it was time to take control of her body. So, she started running/walking 4 times a week. She worked her way up to 4 miles, but still felt she was lacking something.
“I saw an ad on Facebook for a Beginner Bootcamp at Fox Fitness but I had too many events at the time and knew I would have to miss quite a bit. So, I just kept running and walking. But when I saw the ad for the 42 Day Transformation, the timing was right I decided to try it,” explained Carmen, “I was afraid to go to the gym; I don’t know how to use the equipment and so I just wasn’t comfortable. But when I called Becky and spoke with her, it felt right. And I am so glad I did!”
Carmen is a mother of three children, a wife, a florist, and an avid gardener. She has always been one of those “busy” folks, her down-time, if she is lucky to get any, revolves around music. All three kids are into music and require ferrying to lessons, band practice, and the like. And her youngest also plays tennis.
Despite all the demands on her time, Carmen was able to make it to Fox Fitness five and even six times a week during the 42 Day Transformation challenge. It was like she was making up for lost time.
“My first day I had no idea what to expect. I thought it would be really hard – I didn’t realize they were going to progress us through the movements. I was still so sore the next day – but it was something even I could do. After a couple of weeks? I loved it. When Becky and Johanne teach class, they show us how to do stuff so we don’t get hurt. I’m a fast learner but some of the moves were hard for me. They are always right there making sure I do it right and if not, they always show me. Now, on days that I don’t go I really miss it. I really do love it! And everyone is so nice- there is no judgment,” Carmen enthused.
“I’m only 5’1”, so when I gain even one pound it shows.I t was three years ago when I first felt it – I like to feel cute but I had gained some weight and didn’t feel pretty or feel good. I wish I had come sooner. I’ve lost 5 pounds so far and my bras are loose, my clothes fit better. I was surprised (at the Challenge Celebration) when they announced there was a Challenge winner. I didn’t even know they did that. And I was really surprised when it was me. I didn’t really lose that much weight.”
But weight isn’t everything, in fact, these challenges are about the overall transformation. Not just about what a scale says, but about dropping fat while gaining muscle and toning up the body. And it doesn’t end there…it’s also about creating a healthy lifestyle, changing one’s mindset about fitness, and simply being the best possible you.
If all we paid attention to was the number on the scale we may think it’s not much of a the victory; however, 5 pounds in 6 weeks while adding muscle is AMAZING!
And on top of that Carmen even lost 2.8% bodyfat and 3.75 total inches in her chest, waist, and hips!!
Before she started working out, Carmen would have a glass, or two, or three each night. But now, she said, “I don’t want it like that anymore. I still love it and will drink it for special occasions or on the weekends, but I don’t crave it like I did.”
“I’ve got so much more energy now,” she laughed, adding, “my husband isn’t so sure that’s a good thing. And I’m drinking more water. I feel great, when I weighed in (for the final results) I was a little disappointed but when I saw the body fat, I felt really happy. Plus, I think it’s better to lose weight little by little because then I’m confident I can keep it up.”
“If there is anyone out there thinking about trying Fox Fitness – Just do it. Go for it. If you don’t try you won’t see any results. I love it here, really. My husband says I am a black or white girl- there is no gray with me. I either love it or hate it and I am very sincere. Do it- go all in.”
