Kristin Lost 4.3% Body Fat, 5.5 Inches and Can Do 20 Push-Ups!!
There are so many reasons to start exercising. Some people want to lose weight, some want more energy, some want to look svelte for their spouse, and some want to be able to keep up with their kids or grandkids. Going through a health scare is definitely one of the most urgent reasons to begin a fitness journey.
Kristin McCoy and her husband, Jim, moved down to Tampa, Florida from Virginia. Yes, they are Hokies fans, but don’t hold that against them. Kristin has always been a naturally thin girl and so she has been able to keep her weight in check with nutrition and a little bit of walking.
Jim is diabetic, so they’ve carefully watched what they both eat and tried to follow all the good nutrition rules. And that was good enough for Kristin until the day she was sitting in the doctor’s office waiting to find out if those suspicious lumps were cancerous or not. That’s when Kristin realized that being thin didn’t necessarily mean she was healthy.
“I was sitting in the doctor’s office with thoughts running through my head: ‘What can I do?’ and ‘I really need to do my part to try to be healthy’. I went home and researched local fitness places. We were new to the area and didn’t really know anyone to ask, so I found Fox Fitness online. I liked it and so I signed up for the free online program. Then, I decided to come in and meet with Becky Fox (the owner).”
“I was nervous. I had never worked out a day in my life. I was worried that I would feel out of place, that I wouldn’t know the exercises, and that I wouldn’t be able to keep up. And there was the normal anxiety, you know, whenever you try something new: worry that I wouldn’t fit in or that I wouldn’t learn quick enough.”
“They were extraordinarily welcoming. Becky was great and reassuring and the community she has built is a great group of women. It makes you want to be a part of it,” enthused Kristin. “I felt like I was getting safe and sound instruction to start exercising. If I was doing it on my own I wouldn’t have been aware of the proper form and technique. I worry if I had done it on my own that I might have injured myself.”
“The first couple of weeks I was really sore. But the body quickly adjusts. I am still pushing myself but I don’t have the physical discomfort that I had at first. It’s not overall hard, in fact, that’s the beauty of the program – it’s simple.”
“At first, I really just liked the variety (of the workouts). And then I started to see and feel the difference. I’ve gotten stronger and I’ve found I can do so much more than when I started. I feel stronger. I can see definition in my muscles, AND I can do push-ups on my toes! This is the first time ever in my life that I’ve ever done push-ups.”
It’s worth pointing out again that Kristin had never worked out beyond going for a walk. And now, Kristin is oneof the leaders, both physically and emotionally. She has gone from knowing literally nothing about exercising to helping other ladies acclimate and learn. In less than a year, she went from looking like she was in pretty good shape to actually being in fantastic shape.
In less than a year Kristin has lost 4.3% body fat, and 5.5 total inches. And she’s lost 11 pounds despite gaining muscle (which is denser than fat is). But it’s not about what she’s lost. It’s more about what she’s gained.
“The beauty of that success is that it transfers into other parts of my life; the physical transformation carries over. I am even more committed to eating cleaner and to be active outside the gym. It really transcends the workouts – don’t get me wrong, the physical changes are awesome, but my mental shift is key. This experience has made me view my health in a more holistic approach.”
“And I feel more confident and happier. I am doing things and taking action to be the best version of myself that I can be. It’s inherently motivating – working out at Fox Fitness has made me want to be better at everything.”
“Exercise, for me, has become less about staying thin and more about being healthy and strong,” Kristin proclaimed. And then she continued, “If I could speak to my past self, or to any other woman who is sitting in a doctor’s office I would tell her ‘Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Don’t ever think it’s too late to get healthier or be healthy.’”
“Every little thing makes a difference; everything complements the big picture. Eat a healthier dinner, take a walk instead of sitting on the sofa. It’s all about the progress, not perfection. Before you know it, all those small changes give you a different lifestyle and outlook on life.”
“One other thing, kind of a surprise… I was hoping, being new to the area, that I might meet a few friends. But I didn’t know if it was one of those “just show up” gyms where no one connected with the others. But it’s not. They are really a community and the friendships I have made are the treasured outcomes.”
